CRITIQUE
Firstly I would like to thank the Dominion Bullmastiff Club, in particular Jody Neilson, Christine Powley and my hosts Eddie and Lin Rata and Daryl and Karen Coleman. Also a special thank you to my ring steward Wayne Adams who helped make my assignment so enjoyable. I really am grateful to have the opportunity to judge so many nice dogs. It was interesting to see how the style of Bullmastiffs differed from the ones I judged in Australia. In Australia many of the dogs I judged were two toned fawns, many of the dogs had orange eyes. In New Zealand two toning did not seem to be a problem at all and there were few dogs/a smaller percentage of dogs with orange eyes. There were a few dogs who were not as clean as I think they should be when they are shown, there really is nothing worse than going over a dog and having grey or black hands. I don’t care if a dogs whiskers are trimmed but I think an important part of show preparation is a good bath, a good brushing, and toe nails clipped.
There were problems with the tape recorder and my comments for the puppy dog class were unintelligible. I don’t want to rely on my memory to make any comments.
Puppy Dog
1st Storeyline Thunda Bolt
2nd Bulwaren The Boy From Oz (Imp Aust)
3rd Kangala Willy Wonka (Imp Aust)
Junior Dog
1st Ch Oakcroft Good Omen
Brindle dog with lovely head, level topline, could use just a little
bit more angulation front and rear but a very nice dog otherwise.
2nd Ch Kugel Made in the USA
Lovely red with nice head, slightly longer backed than the first
placed dog and higher in rear.
3rd Brookpark Romeo
Nice red fawn, shorter backed than the second placed dog but with
lower tail set and not as nice a head as the two in front of him.
Intermediate Dog
1st NZ Ch Pryderi Iolo (Imp UK)
Lovely fawn dog with nice pigmentation and dark eye, nice head
and bone.
2nd Blackmask Clancy
A slightly bigger fawn male with a good head, higher in the rear
and less angulation than the first placed dog but a nice dog otherwise.
3rd NZ Ch Centaur Bara of the Bush (Imp Aust)
A nice fawn male with more overlay than desirable and light eyes.
He has a pretty head and is otherwise a nice dog.
NZ Bred Dog
1st Ch Vance of Bullmanor
A lovely brindle male with pretty expression, dark eyes, dark mask
and ears, level topline, a nicely balanced dog.
2nd Ch Leonine Warlord
Fawn brindle male with lighter eyes than the first placed dog,
not quite the pleasing expression of the first placed dog, but
a nice dog otherwise with a correct topline and tail set.
3rd Ch Brookpark Sergeant Solo
A large fawn brindle male, more white on the chest than I’d
like to see, a pretty head with dark pigmentation, ears and mask.
Open Dog
1st Winterhork of Bullmanor
A lovely red fawn dog with a beautiful head, dark ears, dark eyes,
dark mask. Nice front and bone. Carries his tail a little high.
2nd Ch Lord Braygn of Bullmanor
Brindle dog with nice head and mask and light eyes. Level topline
but tail set lower than I like.
3rd Lionsden Sir Lancelot
Red fawn male with a slightly plainer head and self coloured ears.
Best Dog
Ch Oakcroft Good Omen
Excelled in head type, pigmentation and topline. Had nice attitude
in the ring.
Reserve Dog
NZ Ch Pryderi Iolo (Imp UK)
Puppy Bitch
1st Kugel Kelly Brown
Fawn bitch with nice head, could use a darker eye. She excelled over
the second place bitch in topline.
2nd Blazon Cauzin Chaos
Also a very nice bitch, head not quite as strong as the first placed
bitch, topline not level.
3rd Storeyline Sweet Jazzmine
A young bitch who should mature into a nice dog, nice topline and
pigmentation.
Junior Bitch
1st Murbisa Kiri (Imp UK)
A brindle bitch, the most correct in the class, the best topline,
decent head, nice mask, dark eyes.
2nd Kugel Barb’eric Dallas
A very nice red bitch with a beautiful head and pigment but a very
poor bite which was the reason for her placement.
3rd Ch Castlecliff Matriarch
Red fawn, her topline was not as good as the two in front of her,
slightly plainer head, with a dark mask.
Intermediate Bitch
1st Nascade Madiera
Both the bitches in this class were lovely fawns with nice black
masks and ears, the first placed bitch was better balanced, had a
better topline and moved better than the second placed bitch.
2nd Nascade Silhouette
Was a very nice bitch as well with a pretty head. Her topline wasn’t
as strong nor her movement.
NZ Bred Bitch
1st Kugel Saucy Spice
A lovely head, dark eyes, beautiful expression. Nice bone and front,
lovely topline and balance front and rear. A shame her coat was in
such poor condition.
2nd Triumph of Lionsden
A smaller bitch with a slightly plainer head but nice dark mask and
dark eyes.
Open Bitch
1st Ch Kingscrest Maggie May
Nice fawn bitch with nice black mask, dark eyes, adequate topline.
2nd Ch Blazon Ona Mission
Another nice fawn, not in quite as good condition as the first
place bitch but a lovely bitch otherwise.
Best Bitch
Kugel Saucy Spice
Excelled in head type, bone and balance. Once her coat gets in good
condition the sky should be the limit with her.
Reserve Bitch
Ch Kingscrest Maggie May
Also a nice bitch. Her topline was not as strong as best bitch and
slightly longer backed but a nice Bullmastiff who could win anywhere.
Best of Breed went to the bitch who was better balanced, more correctly
angulated, beautiful front and shoulders, very pretty head.
Runner Up. This flashy brindle male was also very nice but didn’t
have quite as correct a tail set and shoulders as the bitch.
