Critique by Elizabeth M Gunter

PUPPY DOG
1st NASCADE IN COMMAND
Only one exhibit. Well grown puppy, 6 months of age, moved well, good bone. Prefer a darker eye and a slightly smaller ear.

JUNIOR DOG
1st KANGALA WILLY WONKA (Imp Aust).
Young male with a very good head, won the class because of his correct head properties.Good size of nose where some in the class had noses that were too small, with pinched nostrils. Eye colour and shape good. I would prefer a better topline and tailset. Excellent temperament
2nd BULWAREN THE BOY FROM OZ (Imp Aust).
Brindle, not quite the strength of head or head proportions of the first dog, he is a little downfaced and longer in the muzzle and also small in eye. I would prefer more forechest.
3rd CH.BROOKPARK PLAYBOY
Golden brindle, very nicely coloured dog. Just a little overtypical in the head for me. Ears are a little on the large size and nose is too small. Not the proportions of head of the first dog. Moved well.

INTERMEDIATE DOG
1st CH.OAKCROFT GOOD OMEN
Brindle dog, moved well, showed well.Good bone and substance. Just a little plain in head for me, I would prefer more work in the head and more bone under the eyes, but a typical, stylish dog none the less with a good temperament. .
2nd CH.BLACKMASK CLANCY
Not the construction of the first dog, I would prefer a stronger rear overall. He has good wide underjaw, but his eyes are too small, which affects expression, and his head is a little fleshy.

NZ BRED DOG
1st KUGEL BARB’ERIC ROBT E LEE
Correct type of this dog caught my eye immediately. A very good head, well balanced muzzle to skull, correct expression with a good eye. Very good front, with chest well let down, good bone. Well proportioned body, with good spring of rib. Correct angulation, moved with purpose.
2nd. NASCADE ALMOS FIRE
Not the head proportions of the first dog, lacks the strength in the muzzle. Good body and bone and a good temperament.I would like a little more length of second thigh.

OPEN DOG
1st CH.KUGEL MADE IN THE USA
Excellent type, well performed dog. Good bone. Angulation correct. Very good head, but the eyes are a little close set, which affects his expression.I would like a little more breadth to the muzzle to balance the size of the head overall. A very good bodied dog, good depth of chest and spring of rib. Moved well, strong hindquarters which he uses well.
2nd CH.BROOKPARK SERGEANT SOLO
Not the size of head overall as the first dog, lacks in strength of muzzle, and his eyes are a little on the large and full side. I would like more angulation front and rear and slightly higher tail set. Excellent temperament.

CHALLENGE DOG
KUGEL BARB’ERIC ROBT E LEE
Won on his overall head type, better balance muzzle to skull, strength of muzzle in proportion to skull. I preferred this dog’s expression and his width of underjaw.

RESERVE DOG
CH.KUGEL MADE IN THE USA
Both quality dogs of excellent type.

BABY PUPPY BITCH
1st BLACKMASK TAHI
Preferred this bitch for overall bone and substance at this stage. Slightly stronger in muzzle, my only concern is her pasterns, which are a little long and weak at this stage.
2nd. CASTLECLIFF JOAN OF ARK
Still a little unsure on the lead, but enjoying herself. I would like more strength in the muzzle and more substance overall.

PUPPY BITCH
1st NASCADE MAIDEN IMAGE
A quality puppy who caught my eye, correct type. Although she is only 6 months old, she has good bone and substance.Solid, strong young bitch with good depth and strength of body. Very good head type. Excellent temperament
2nd OPALGUARD CHRYSTAL (Imp Aust)
Lighter bitch, quite nicely made, but not the strength of muzzle of the first bitch. Young and growing but a little leggier than the first bitch at this stage, not quite the strength of body, I would like a shorter loin. Very good temperament.
3rd KANGALA ERIN (Imp Aust)
Being a little naughty on the day, not co-operating on the lead for her handler, but a very good temperament non the less. Not quite the strength in muzzle of the first bitch, nor the body and substance. Like more length in the upper arm and also a slightly shorter loin.

JUNIOR BITCH
1st CH.KUGEL KELLY BROWN
Preferred this bitch for her overall depth and strength of body, and angulation. Moved well. Good bone. Correct head type overall, her ears are a little on the big side, and I would like a darker eye.
2nd NZ CH.MURBISA KIRI (Imp UK)
A plainer headed bitch, I would like more strength in the muzzle and more bone under the eyes. She has a good body, but lacked strength in the rear on the move.

INTERMEDIATE BITCH
1st GRASSLOCK STELLA POLARIS (Imp Aust)
Lighter type of bitch in body than I would prefer, I would like more width in the chest. But overall quite good type for the class, which was very mixed. Quite good head type, although I would like more strength in the muzzle
2nd. IRONSIDE WILD INDIAN (Imp USA)
A very attractive bitch, and handled very well. A lot to like with this bitch. A slightly smaller head overall and small eye, a little long in muzzle. A good bodied bitch who moved well. I preferred the head proportions and construction on the first bitch.
3rd. CH.CASTLECLIFF MATRIACH
A strong bitch, but she lacked femininity.Plain headed bitch, and a little long in muzzle. I would like more work in the muzzle. I would like more length of upperarm, but she is a strong and typical bitch overall.

NZ BRED BITCH
1st CH.KUGEL SAUCY SPICE
Correct type, and won the class on overall type and head type. She has a well constructed head, balanced muzzle to skull, with good strength of muzzle. A strong bodied bitch with good depth and ribbing. Good bone. Moved well.
2nd NASCADE SILHOUETTE
A lighter bitch overall, both in head and body. Needs more strength in the rear, hindquarter movement not her fortune. I would prefer more strength in the muzzle and a bigger head overall.

OPEN BITCH
1st CH. BLAZON CAUZIN CHAOS
Only one exhibit
This bitch really did not want to be here. Typical bitch with a good body, she moved well. I would prefer a slightly bigger head overall, with more strength in skull.

CHALLENGE BITCH
CH. KUGEL SAUCY SPICE
Although the young bitch caught my eye, this bitch had to win on maturity and overall type.

RESERVE BITCH
NASCADE MAIDEN IMAGE
A very promising young bitch, still a little loose. Good head properties, her time will come.

BEST IN SHOW - KUGEL BARB’ERIC ROBT E LEE
RUNNER UP - CH. KUGEL SAUCY SPICE.

I thank the Club for the opportunity to judge one of my favorite Breeds, and I thank the exhibitors for making my day a most enjoyable one. The KIWI hospitality was as always...... wonderful. I found the type overall better than I have found before at times, on previous visits to NZ, which augers well for the Breed. But I was concerned in a couple of areas. Firstly, and I think very importantly, the size of the noses, a most important feature from a health point of view. There were a number of dogs with small noses and pinched nostrils, this worried me, and I penalised those dogs. This breed MUST have a BIG nose with well open nostrils. Secondly, small eyes, these spoil expression, and a number of dogs failed in this area. Some dogs lacked the size of head overall so necessary in a correct Bullmastiff, and the mouths on some dogs were too undershot. Simply because the Standard allows an undershot mouth should not be taken as desirable. Very few dogs had the correct bite, and the desired wide underjaw. Overall movement was good, and the temperaments excellent.
